A Parent’s Guide to DanTDM (Youtube Channel)

IMPORTANT: I have not watched every video on this channel, but I have watched several. This article was made to get a general feel of the channel, and probably does not record everything that specifically happens on the channel.

DanTDM

Types: Video Games

Video Summaries: Newer videos are let’s play style and focus on a variety of newly released games, with the occasional video about his life, reacting to things, or toys. Older vidoes focus almost exclusively on the video game Minecraft.

Quality

Composure: 3½/5 Well Done: Dan has a friendly vibe and fun tones that would make it easy for a child to relate to and feel comfortable around. He does have fun with it, being enthusiastic and using different voices for each character. In a way, it is like watching a relative play a video game. They are a bit normal, as in there is not a lot of humor or random things said. It is almost what you would expect if you yourself were playing a video game or doing the things he was.

Interest of Content: 3/5 Average: The videos would be good for watching a game being played that you yourself do not own or perhaps for the feeling of community that comes from watching others, but other than that does not have anything extraordinary about them.

Camera and Microphone Quality: 4/5 Well Done: The quality of both the videos and voice are clean and easy to understand, including the ones from other media and even in his oldest videos.

Overall: 3½/5 Above Average: The videos themselves are a good quality and have a friendly vibe, but the content isn’t always the most interesting. It’s plain more than anything, giving the viewers exactly what they are expecting, which can be one hand can be comforting as you don’t have to worry about crazy things, but on the other hand can be boring. I personally think children between six and twelve would find it most interesting, but outside of it may find it boring.

Moral Content

Sexual and Inappropriate Content: ½/5 Brief Appearance: Pixel characters are shown shirtless and in bikinis.

Violence: 2/5 Cartoon Violence: Some video games have fighting.

Swearing and Using the Lord’s Name in Vain: 4/5 Older Videos Have Rare Cursing: Videos from his first year or two have rare misuses God’s name, the use of the “s” word, the “bi” word, and even the “f” word. Videos after that time have no swearing whatsoever.

Emotional, Intense, and Disturbing Content: 3/5 Scary Content: DanTDM does play scary games like Five Nights at Freddies and Granny.

Religious Issues: 3/5 Some Demonic Video Games: He plays Bendy and the Ink Machine, which has demon villains. A video talks about Fortnite being haunted. Some video games have things like zombies.

Magic: 2½/5 In-Universe Magic: Some videos have magical video game content.

Others: The blog revolves around playing video games ranging from more popular ones like Nintendo’s Mario Party and Pokemon games to apps like Granny to indie games like Bendy and the Ink Machine and Baldi’s Basics. Movies like Ralph Breaks the Internet are mentioned and even shown. Dan also advertises personal merchandise to viewers.

Dancing is the theme of some videos. Dan does have pierced ears and tattoos.

Overall: 2½/5 Older Child Appropriate: Though some of the games he plays are not Christian friendly, he himself is a fairly clean, pleasant person. For parents, I would recommend allowing children to watch videos, but only videos of video games they would feel comfortable with their kids playing and/or seeing. Some videos are safe for all ages, and some are for teenagers and older children. I would therefore only recommend his newer videos as well as videos that do not have video games with demonic themes.
